What is a Mantra?
A mantra is a word, sound or phrase that is repeated either alound or internally to aid in your concentration while meditating. The word Mantra is a Sanskrit word that can be broken down into two parts; "man" which means "to think" and "tra" which means "tools or instruments" so the literally meaning is "instruments of thought." Thus a mantra can be considered a linguistic device for deepening one's thought or developing an enlightened mind. Scholars consider mantras to be older than 1000 BC. In Chinese a mantra is called zhenyan which literally means "true words"
Mantra meditation is thought to increase calmness and the ability for the practitioner to live in the present moment.
The most basic mantra is Om, which in Hinduism is known as the "pranava mantra," the source of all mantras. This sylabble is often repeated at the beginning or end of each mantra or by itself.
